WRITERS’ WORKSHOPS: Most available both ON-SITE and VIRTUAL

Scroll above, find some descriptions below.

“Prose to Poetry” (varying lengths: 50 minutes for abridged version, 2.5 – 3 hours for full workshop/intensive)

You have a favorite piece of writing that you love but it never really went anywhere.  Or something you published and love so much that you’d like to see it in a fresh, new way.  What can you do to give it new life?  In this fully interactive workshop, you’ll turn a piece of prose into a poetry draft.  If you bring a piece of your own prose such as a short story, essay, or blog post, you can work directly with that.  If not, there will be samples to apply the techniques to during the workshop.

“What is Ekphrasis?” (varying lengths, from one 2-4 hour workshop to a course of 2-hour sessions)

Ekphrastic poetry is inspired by Visual Art: paintings, sculptures, photographs, etc.  Many galleries feature ekphrastic readings, which Kari has participated in across Maryland. Learn how to pair your words with visual art!

“Find Your Advocate Voice” (varying lengths, from 1 – 2.5 hours)

Through readings of Kari’s poetry and group discussion, gain inspiration for finding your own voice to advocate for marginalized groups.

“Critiques: How to Give and Receive (and Hopefully Not Cry)” (either 50 minutes for an overview or 2-2.5 hours for a more interactive workshop with hands-on practice)

Kari draws from her experiences critiquing and being critiqued in settings such as writers’ retreats, formal conference critiques, manuscript editing, and peer feedback forums, to help attendees embrace critiques of their work and give feedback that is valuable to other writers.

“Artist’s Statements, CV’s, and Bios, Oh My!” (50-minute overview up to 4 hours, can be divided into two 2-hour sessions)

Learn what each is, and when you need them. Craft bios of varying wordcounts for journals, conferences, and everything in between.

“Poetry 101: an Interactive Intro” (varying lengths from 1.5 – 3 hours)

In this interactive workshop, we’ll chat about poetry and Kari will introduce some forms and poetic devices that you’ll try out.  She’ll play excerpts of familiar poems and read excerpts of her own poetry to illustrate these poetic devices and how to play with sound.  You’ll apply these techniques to a few of the forms that she introduces and walk away with not only some knowledge, but the start of several poems!

“Journaling to Poetry” (varying lengths, from 2 hours to multiple sessions)

Bring your journal and let’s turn some of your favorite, or most impactful, or saddest, or most beautiful journaling into poetry.  From brain dump to your deepest feelings, you will identify pieces of journaling that you’d like to work with, then apply a series of poetic devices to them to create one or more poem drafts in class!

TESTIMONIALS

From Armed Services Arts Partnership students:

“The instructor is very knowledgeable and presented the material in a very easy to understand format.

The instructor was extremely knowledgeable in the craft and explained everything clearly making all aspects of the different forms of poetry fun. I would love to take a 6-week course on poetry from her and hope it’s offered in the future.

“I love this class and I especially love Kari’s supportive manner of guiding the class sessions.

From Maryland Writers’ Association attendee:

This workshop inspired me. Kari provided insightful and practical editing methods to apply to a larger body of written content.

OTHER WORKSHOPS

“Planning a Roadtrip” (3-6 hours, can spread over two days)

There’s so much travel information out there, but how do you find it, curate it, and use it to plan your roadtrip? How do you form loops and calculate reasonable drive times? Whether you’re contemplating a one-week roadtrip or a grand Bucket List adventure, this workshop will guide you in creating interesting routes, finding unique stops and lodging, timing different legs of a trip that involves fixed dates such as weddings or festivals, and rerouting mid-trip without sacrificing the fun—while still leaving room for spontaneity! Kari will share practical advice, inspiring experiences, cautionary tales, and downright debacles—in RVs, SUVs, vans, and sedans—from her cross-country roadtrips, Germany’s scenic Fairy Tale route, circling the Iberian Peninsula, looping Ireland, rounding the Great Lakes, meandering through Normandy, exploring out West, skirting the southern coast of Iceland, and driving throughout Central, Western, and Northern Europe.
