DESCRIPTION:I’ll be presenting at the Maryland Writers’ Association– \nYou have a favorite piece of writing that you love but it never really went anywhere.  Or something you published but love so much that you’d like to see it in a fresh\, new way.  What can you do to give it new life?  In this fully interactive workshop\, you’ll turn a piece of prose into a poetry draft.  If you bring a piece of your own prose such as a short story\, essay\, or blog post\, you can work directly with that.  If not\, there will be samples to apply the techniques to during the workshop. \nUsing several prose works that Kari turned into publishable poetry as examples\, we’ll pull apart work and apply poetic devices to produce a poem draft.

DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY–Open mic will take place in the hotel lobby on Saturday night.  I’ll be hosting and reading my own work.  The first annual MWA Conference Open Mic went so well that we can’t wait to do it again! \nSUNDAY–I will also be presenting during the conference on Sunday at 3:45pm\, whipping out my Linguistics training for “What Should You Consider When Creating a Language for Your World?” \nAre you thinking about creating languages for the worlds in your novel? \nWhat will make your community sound mighty? Gentle? Friendly? Adversary? What will sound more foreign’ or more familiar’ to the American English reader? \nIn this workshop\, the presenter will provide linguistic guidance on some of the phonological\, lexical\, and grammatical elements of language that you should consider when creating a believable\, readable language from scratch. \nI continue to serve on the conference committee this year\, involved in bringing in more great workshops and activities.

DESCRIPTION:I will be hosting a facilitated discussion at the annual MWA conference: \nCHALLENGES FACING INDEPENDENT AUTHORS: A FACILITATED DISCUSSION — KARI MARTINDALE\nA facilitated group discussion about obstacles facing independent authors. The speaker\, who authored two self-published children’s books and ran the MWA-hosted Support Indie Summer\, will present issues she has faced and discuss how she dealt with them\, while facilitating a group discussion about those and other challenges the audience members have faced and/or are still facing. Discussion topics include marketing\, stigma\, lack of resources\, and more. Bring your experience and your questions! \n(I will be attending both days of the conference.)
